Baby's First Year Goes Fast. Here's How to Actually Remember It.

The first year with a baby is one of those seasons that everyone warns you about - "it goes so fast" - and somehow it still catches you off guard. One day you're holding a sleepy, seven-pound newborn who fits perfectly in the curve of your arms. A few months later, that same baby is sitting up, grinning with their whole face, completely full of personality. Then you blink, and there's cake on the ceiling and a one-year-old who has absolutely no interest in sitting still. It all happens so fast, and it deserves to be remembered in a way that actually does it justice.

That's exactly why I created my Grow With Me package - a milestone photography experience designed to walk alongside your family through baby's entire first year, from the very first days all the way to that first birthday celebration.

When Every Stage Feels Like a Different Baby

One of my favorite things about milestone photography is watching how much a baby changes between sessions. I worked with a family who started with me during their newborn session - their baby was just days old, so tiny and sleepy. We captured all of those sweet first details: little fingers, soft stretches, and the way they fit perfectly in their parents' arms.

By the sitter session, that same baby had completely transformed. Full of smiles, sitting up proudly, showing so much personality it was almost hard to believe this was the same little one. Then came the first birthday - balloons, cake, so many laughs.

Watching a family go from welcoming their newborn to celebrating one full year together is one of the most special experiences I get to be part of. It's more than photos. It's preserving memories from one of the fastest seasons of life.

Why Each Milestone Deserves Its Own Session

Every stage of baby's first year matters - even the ones that might feel small in the moment. Here's what each session is really capturing:

Newborn Sessions

These are all about the tiny details that change almost overnight. The way their little hand wraps around your finger. How they curl up and fit against your chest. The softness of everything. Newborn sessions preserve what you will absolutely want to remember but will struggle to recall in full detail just a few months from now.

Sitter Sessions

This is honestly one of the most overlooked milestones, and I want to change that. Around 6-8 months, babies are sitting up independently, curious about everything, and absolutely full of smiles and personality. They haven't figured out how to crawl away at full speed yet, which makes for a beautiful, relaxed session. The joy at this age is something else entirely.

First Birthday Sessions

A first birthday session is a celebration of everything - the growth, the love, and an entire year of memories your family has built together. Cake smash, balloons, big feelings, big laughs. This one tends to be everyone's favorite because a one-year-old has absolutely zero filter and every single reaction is genuine.

What Makes the Grow With Me Package Different

The best part of booking a Grow With Me package isn't just the photos - it's how simple it makes the entire first year for your family.

  • You don't have to search for a photographer at each milestone or worry about whether someone will understand your family's style

  • You already have someone who knows you, knows your baby, and knows how to make the experience relaxed and stress-free

  • Your photos have a consistent look and feel across all three sessions, so the story of baby's first year comes together beautifully

  • You're not scrambling to book last minute - everything is already planned and reserved

It removes so much of the mental load that comes with trying to document this season on your own. You just show up. I handle the rest.

A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Book

Timing matters more than most families realize, so here's what I always share upfront:

  • Newborn sessions are best within the first two weeks, while babies are still sleepy and curled up naturally

  • Sitter sessions work best when baby is sitting independently but not yet crawling fast - usually around 6-8 months

  • First birthday sessions are ideal about 3-6 weeks before the actual birthday, especially if you want photos ready for invitations, party decor, or announcements

I also want every family to know: these sessions do not need to be perfect. Babies need breaks. They need snacks, cuddles, and the occasional diaper change - and all of that is completely normal and expected. Some of the sweetest moments happen in between the planned shots. My goal is always a relaxed experience that results in timeless images, not a perfectly choreographed performance.

The First Year Passes Whether You Document It or Not

I think about this a lot - as a photographer and as a mom. Life moves fast, and this particular season moves faster than almost any other. The newborn stage lasts weeks, not months. The sitter stage has a window. And before you know it, the baby who once fit in the crook of your arm is covered in birthday cake and walking toward you on their own.

You don't get that time back. But you can hold onto it.

That's what milestone photography is really for. Not perfectly posed portraits to hang on a wall, but genuine proof that this season happened - that you were there, that your baby was exactly this little, and that it was worth pausing for.
