Mini Sessions vs. Full Sessions: How to Choose What's Actually Right for Your Family
Not sure whether to book a mini session or a full session? You are so not alone in feeling confused about this - it's honestly one of the questions I get most often. And I get it, because from the outside, it can feel like the main difference is just time and price. But there's a lot more to it than that, and choosing the right fit for your family can genuinely change how the whole experience feels - and what you walk away with.
The Real Reason This Decision Matters
Here's what I've learned after photographing a lot of families: mini sessions and full sessions aren't competing options. They serve completely different purposes. Neither is better than the other - they're just built for different families, different goals, and different seasons of life.
I've had families where a mini session was absolutely perfect. The little ones were running on borrowed time, fully done after about ten minutes, and we still walked away with beautiful, updated photos that their family genuinely loved. Quick, fun, stress-free - exactly what they needed.
And I've had families who realized after the fact that a full session would've been a better fit. Not because anything went wrong, but because their child needed more time to warm up to me before the real magic started happening. Some kids take 20 to 30 minutes before they fully come out of their shell - and that's completely normal. A full session creates the space for that.
Knowing which one fits your family before you book makes all the difference.
When a Mini Session Is the Right Call
Mini sessions are genuinely wonderful - when they're the right fit. Here's when I'd point a family in that direction:
You need a handful of updated photos, not a full gallery
Your kids have shorter attention spans (and you know it)
You love the specific theme, setup, or location being offered
You're okay with less variety in poses and backgrounds
You want something quick, simple, and more budget-friendly
One thing I always want clients to know going in: mini sessions are intentionally designed to move quickly. There usually isn't a lot of extra time for breaks, resetting, or warming up. That doesn't mean they can't go beautifully - they absolutely can. But the magic often comes from embracing a little chaos and letting kids just be kids. If you go in with that mindset, you're already set up for a great experience.
I also think about location and vibe a lot when it comes to minis. Some families thrive at a playful beach setup where kids can move around and explore freely. Others feel more at home in something calm and cozy, like a studio or greenhouse. The setting really does shape how your photos feel - so it's worth thinking about what actually matches your family's personality.
When a Full Session Is Worth the Investment
Full sessions are where I get to really slow down, let everyone settle in, and capture those in-between moments that end up meaning the most. Here's when I'd point a family toward a full session instead:
Your child takes a while to warm up to new people
You want candid, storytelling moments - not just posed images
You want outfit changes or more than one location
You're building a gallery with variety and real depth
You don't want to feel rushed
If wall art, albums, or a full storytelling gallery are part of the picture - literally - a full session is usually the better investment. The unhurried pace changes everything. Kids relax. Parents stop thinking about the camera. The real moments start happening. And that's where my favorite images always come from.
How to Actually Decide
My biggest piece of advice is to think about your end goal before you book anything.
Ask yourself:
What am I going to do with these photos? If you mainly want updated images for holiday cards, gifts, or social media, a mini session is often a perfect fit. If you want wall art, albums, or a gallery full of real storytelling moments, a full session is usually worth it.
How does my kid do with new people and new environments? If they warm up quickly and roll with things, a mini can be wonderful. If they need time, give them that time.
What do I actually want to feel during the session? If relaxed, unhurried, and fully present sounds like the goal - that points toward a full session.
There's no wrong answer here. The best session is simply the one that fits your family best. And I'm always happy to help you figure that out - because I'd much rather point you toward the right option than just book the most expensive one.
